Digital Camera Help

    I have a nikon d40. What I see on the view screen of the camera is never what I wind up with on the computer. The pictures are allways darker , sometimes so dark that adjusting them even from a raw file isn't workable.
    Any ideas or advice?

    I am having a huge issue I'm so upset I went ona trip with my man took about an hour of digital video about 200 pics and i accidentaly hit format in the menu and all are deleted or gone somewhere what happened?
